The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes plenty of opportunities to celebrate, connect, and… eat.
It’s also a time when regular habits can easily fall by the wayside, especially if we’re not intentional.
But here’s the good news:
This time of year doesn’t have to be synonymous with “falling off track” or “putting on pounds.”
If you find the holidays challenging (as many of us do), here are three simple but effective strategies to help you finish the year strong while still enjoying everything the season has to offer.
1. Avoid the “Holiday Pass”
The Holiday Pass happens when you mentally check out of your health habits and give yourself a free-for-all in the name of celebration.
It’s similar to the Weekend Pass—that all-too-familiar pattern where you eat well Monday through Friday, only to throw it all out the window once the weekend hits. (“I’ll start fresh on Monday!”)
But it doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
You can eat well and enjoy the treats.
You can move your body and take time to rest.
You can celebrate without abandoning everything that makes you feel good.
2. Be Selective
Some holiday foods are genuinely special—those once-a-year recipes or nostalgic favourites worth savouring. Others are just typical treats available year-round, dressed up in festive packaging.
The goal here isn’t deprivation. It’s discernment.
Before a holiday meal or party, decide in advance what you want to enjoy and how much feels right. That might mean planning ahead for a few drinks or setting a limit on sweets or snacks.
And remember, a few indulgent days don’t have to turn into a month of mindless eating.
3. Stick with Your Routine
Structure is your friend, especially during the holiday season.
Keeping up with your baseline habits—hydration, movement, nutrient-dense meals, quality sleep—helps you stay grounded and energized through it all.
It also prevents that slippery slope of “I’ll just wait until January…” thinking.
Here’s a helpful trick:
On days when you know there will be holiday meals or events, try to keep your routine as normal as possible earlier in the day.
That way, you create space for more flexibility later without the guilt.
Final Thoughts
You don’t have to choose between enjoying the holidays and honouring your health.
You can do both, with intention.
Here’s to ending the year strong.
