Putting food in its appropriate place

I recently wrapped up a final coaching session with a client, and she said something that stayed with me.

As we celebrated her reaching her goal, which was initially about losing the extra weight she had put on over the last 2 years of a pandemic, I asked her, “what else has changed?”

Here’s what she shared…

Food has now been put back in its appropriate place.

When she initially came to work with me, food was taking up too much mental bandwidth.

(What should she eat? What shouldn’t she be eating? What diet would best help her lose weight? Etc etc.)

Where is the appropriate place for food?

This might beg the question: where is the appropriate place for food?

Here’s the thing…

I believe food goes beyond just “physical nourishment” for the body.

never resonated with the notion that “food is just fuel.”

I know it’s so much more.

It’s also about connection.

It’s how we gather and commune with our loved ones.

We sometimes consider it “emotional fuel” for the soul.

But…

The relationship between food’s physical and emotional aspects can become extremely imbalanced.

For example…

When food is your sole source of companionship.

When food is the solution to every problem—whether you’re stressed, bored, lonely, or need to procrastinate.

When food is your primary source of entertainment.

When you can’t sit still in front of the television unless there is an accompanying bowl of popcorn or chips.

When it just takes up too much mental space, and you’re unable to focus on other projects and tasks (again, without having to snack your way through them.)

This is, of course, individual.

But it’s a great question to ask yourself when considering your own life.

Is food in its appropriate place?

If not, consider that (working on) putting it back there might allow you to reach your weight and health goals much faster.
