What Does It Mean to Be at Your “Ideal” Weight?
Your ideal weight isn’t a fixed number—it’s a range. And it can shift throughout different phases of your life.
I define ideal weight as the point where you feel your best physically, mentally, and emotionally. You like the way your clothes fit, your eating feels natural and enjoyable, and—most importantly—it’s sustainable.
It’s not about chasing a number or squeezing yourself into someone else’s standard.
Why the Scale Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
People often talk about weight like it’s the ultimate marker of health, but what matters more is body composition and how you actually feel in your body.
You can fall within the “normal” BMI range and still carry excess fat that may negatively impact your health. This is often referred to as normal weight obesity, and it’s surprisingly common.
Rachel’s Story: A Real-Life Example
Take my client Rachel.
According to her BMI, she was in the “healthy” range—but she didn’t feel healthy.
She often overate in the evenings, grazed until bedtime, and felt bloated and sluggish. Her sleep and digestion were off. She also carried extra weight around her midsection—a common pattern linked to increased risk for chronic health issues like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes, even when BMI appears normal.
After improving her eating habits and putting a stop to evening grazing, Rachel’s weight dropped nearly 20 pounds. She was still within the “normal” BMI category—but now felt more energized, clear-headed, and comfortable in her clothes.
More importantly, she was finally in control of her eating.
That’s what made it her true ideal weight.
The Bigger Picture.
This isn’t about chasing some fantasy number—it’s about creating a way of eating and living that’s sustainable and supports your long-term health.
It also doesn’t mean everyone should aim to weigh less.
Some people may fall into the “overweight” or even “obese” category on the BMI chart, but carry a high proportion of muscle and relatively low body fat (think athletes or muscular individuals).
That’s why it’s important to look beyond BMI. It’s just one piece of the puzzle—not a full picture of your health.
Final Thought
Your ideal weight is the one where:
- You feel good physically, mentally, and emotionally
- You’re not constantly battling hunger or obsessing about food
- You can sustain your habits long-term
Because it’s not just about how you look.
It’s about how you live.
