A Letter from Your Future Self

Imagine receiving a letter from your future self that provides helpful insights and guidance to help you realize a particular goal or illuminate the steps required to take you from point A to point B.

It might sound like science fiction, but it’s actually a powerful journaling practice that can spark real change—and it’s something you can do right now.

Projecting yourself into the future, even just a few months ahead, and reflecting on what’s possible can have a profound impact on your mindset—and the actions that stem from it.

In this blog post, we’ll explore how to write a letter from your future self, why it’s such an effective tool for behaviour change, and how to use it to bring your goals to life.

Choosing the Right Timeframe

This exercise can be done with any future date in mind. It could be 1 or 3 months from now, your next birthday, or another milestone date.

Choose something that isn’t so distant it feels unattainable, but still allows for meaningful change to take place.

With the New Year just a couple of months away, that could be a perfect target, especially since that transition often prompts us to reflect on our goals and intentions.

Let Your Letter Be Your North Star

Think of this letter as your “North Star.” It’s a guide that reconnects you to what really matters—your priorities, your goals, and the feeling you want to create.

When you’re having a tough day or considering giving up, this letter becomes a source of inspiration. It reminds you why you started and how accomplished you’ll feel once you follow through.

This is a self-generated anchor. It keeps you grounded in your ‘why’ when life gets chaotic and motivation dips.

How to Write Your Letter

1. Create the Space

Find a quiet, comfortable place to reflect. You can grab a pen and paper or open a blank document, but you might also want to light a candle, play some music, or make a cozy drink—whatever helps you settle in.

2. Choose a Date

Let’s say you’re aiming for the New Year—that’s a two-month window. But you can choose any timeline that feels motivating and realistic.

3. Write in the Present Tense

Describe how you feel as if you were already living in that future moment. This technique helps make your vision feel more real and within reach.

4. Keep It Real

You don’t need to predict the future. Focus on what’s likely if you consistently follow through on your goals.

Instead of saying:

“I’m 20 pounds lighter.”

You could say:

“I’m following through on my food plan, I’m working out consistently, I feel more confident in my clothes, and I’m prioritizing rest.”

Be specific—but make sure your goals are achievable within the time frame you’ve chosen.

Prompts to Guide You

Here are some prompts to help you get started:

  • How do I want to feel in that future moment?
  • What did it take to get me here? What steps did I have to take?
  • What thoughts did I have to intentionally practice to reach this point?
  • What limiting beliefs did I have to let go of?
  • What uncomfortable emotions did I have to embrace or overcome?
  • What achievements am I most proud of?
  • What excites me the most about the future?

Revisit and Refine Over Time

As your chosen time frame arrives, go back and reread your letter.

Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem. Then, write a new letter for the next stretch ahead. This helps you refine your vision, renew your motivation, and keep moving forward with clarity.

The Bottom Line

When you put your aspirations into words, you create a vision to work toward. That clarity can guide your goals and your next steps.

A letter from your future self isn’t just a fun journaling prompt. It’s a motivational tool rooted in visualization, self-coaching, and intentional action.

So go ahead—take ten minutes, put pen to paper, and let your future self lead the way.
