Why Enjoying the Journey Is Key to Lasting Health and Weight Loss

When we think about reaching a weight-loss or health goal, there’s often this idea that once the goal is achieved, we will have “arrived.”

Kind of like checking something off a list. Done. Don’t need to think about that anymore.

But here’s the truth: there is no finish line.

You don’t reach your happy weight or health goal and then put your feet up and say, “Well, that was fun. Let’s go back to what I was doing before—when I was struggling.”

Everything that got you to that point will need to be integrated, to some degree, as you move forward.

So what does that mean?

You’d better enjoy the things that got you there. Because if you hate the methods, you won’t maintain the results.

That doesn’t mean you can’t experiment. Try different tools and strategies. See how your body responds. Collect data. Keep what works.

But be kind to yourself. Check your expectations.

Are they realistic?

Where does your weight naturally settle when you’re sustainably practicing healthy habits, eating to hunger and satisfaction, feeling energized, and enjoying life? Let that be your guide, not an arbitrary number on the scale.

This is where I like to say (and I know it’s a little cheesy): fall in love with the journey.

Celebrate those “smaller” milestones along the way:

  • Feeling better physically, mentally, and emotionally
  • Having more energy
  • Noticing your clothes fit differently
  • Craving more nourishing foods
  • Becoming more attuned to your hunger and emotional cues
  • Feeling less preoccupied with food—because you know it’ll still be there tomorrow

You start to feel empowered around food, rather than being controlled by it.

There may be detours. Life phases change. Priorities shift. But that doesn’t mean you’re lost. You’ve built an internal GPS. Even if you veer off course, you know how to get back.

And a few days, weeks, or even a month won’t undo all the progress you’ve made. Because in the big picture, the scale tips in favour of your long-term habits.

That doesn’t mean the journey is always comfortable.

If food has been your primary coping mechanism or source of pleasure, it will take time—and oftentimes discomfort—to untangle that relationship.

That’s why it’s so essential to cultivate non-food sources of pleasure, connection, and self-soothing. Because when life feels empty, food (and alcohol) can too easily become the filler.

Enjoy your food, yes. But make an experience out of it, beyond just the food.

Connect. Celebrate. Slow down.

I’ve always resonated with French culture, where snacking is rare, and meals are savoured and shared.

Find your personal sweet spot.

For me, that means fueling myself with foods that help me feel and function my best, while also making room for foods that bring me joy.

Having a set of guiding principles to “keep me on track” while fully enjoying my life has been key to my journey.

Strike that balance in a way that makes sense for you.

Happy travels,

~Elaine
