Change is inherently uncomfortable.
Every time you go against the grain of a familiar habit, resistance shows up.
Totally normal.
Sometimes, it might even feel like your inner toddler is throwing a tantrum:
“I don’t wanna—and you can’t make me.”
And while some discomfort is part of growth…
Here’s what isn’t sustainable:
Trying to live in discomfort 24/7.
Eventually, you hit a wall.
And start asking:
- Is this even worth it?
- Why does this feel so hard?
- Can I actually keep this up long-term?
That’s why one of the smartest (and most overlooked) strategies for habit change is this:
Build comfort into the process.
Here’s how to do that in practical, everyday ways:
1. Create backup plans
Life happens. Plans shift.
And when you’ve already decided, “If X happens, I’ll do Y instead,” you’re not scrambling or throwing in the towel—you’re adapting.
No need to reinvent this daily.
Create a few default backups (e.g., a quick meal alternative or a shorter workout) and use them as needed when life throws a curveball.
2. Remove self-negotiation
Many of my clients find comfort in having an “eating window” or what I call “dinner and done.”
When the window closes, it’s closed.
No 9:30 p.m. debate about cheese and crackers.
No “Should I? Shouldn’t I?”
You made the decision already—and that’s the power of pre-deciding.
3. Design routines you actually enjoy
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, I was a regular gym-goer.
But like many others, I started working out at home, and quickly realized I liked it better.
No commute. No wasted time.
Just roll out of bed (coffee first ☕) and hit the mat.
My minimum baseline? One session a day.
Some days I do more. Some days, less intensity.
During the week, it’s usually strength training. On weekends, I might do a mobility workout or a gentle flow.
But I’ve made it easy to show up—because the structure is simple, and the options are flexible.
That’s what makes it sustainable, even on my busiest days.
Where can you build more comfort into your routines?
Food. Movement. Sleep. Planning.
Start small.
Yes, a little discomfort is part of the process.
But lasting change happens when you feel safe, supported, and capable of sticking with things.
