This post is part of a series on simple mindset shifts to help you sidestep some of the most common pitfalls when working toward your health, weight, or wellness goals. If you missed the first two, you can read Mindset Shift #1 here and Mindset #2 here. This will be the final installment of the series.)
There’s nothing wrong with having a weight loss goal.
But problems arise when:
- Your self-worth becomes tied to the number on the scale
- You treat that number as the only measure of success
- It dictates whether today is a “good” or “bad” day
- You use it as a reason to shame or judge yourself
This kind of all-or-nothing thinking is not only exhausting—it’s ineffective. And it often leads to cycles of restriction, rebellion, and guilt.
We often become hyper-focused on actions:
Did I eat the “right” things? Did I work out hard enough?
But it’s not just the actions themselves that matter—
It’s the intention behind them that determines whether they’re truly serving you.
The same behaviour can lead to very different outcomes depending on whether it’s driven by self-respect or self-judgment.
So ask yourself:
Are your choices rooted in care and alignment with your future goals?
Or are they driven by urgency, perfectionism, or punishment?
This is where the third mindset shift comes in.
Mindset Shift #3: Prioritize Exquisite Self-Care
I love this concept because it immediately shifts the energy.
When a client gets stuck in perfectionist thinking or diet mentality, I guide her here.
Why?
Because it’s hard to judge, punish, or shame yourself while also taking exquisite care of yourself.
This kind of self-care isn’t passive or indulgent.
It’s intentional, respectful, and often—yes—uncomfortable in the short term.
But it builds the inner stability and consistency that quick fixes never can.
What Exquisite Self-Care Is Not
- It’s not about always doing what feels easiest
- It’s not about avoiding challenge
- And it goes far beyond bubble baths and pedicures (though there’s room for those too)
At its core, exquisite self-care is about the relationship you have with yourself and the standards you hold for your own well-being.
What It Does Look Like
Here’s what taking exquisite care of yourself might include:
- Following through on your word—and honouring your commitments to yourself
- Feeding your body well because you want to feel energized, strong, and mentally clear
- Sitting down to eat slowly and mindfully, instead of grabbing bites on the go or eating over the sink
- Moving your body regularly—not to burn calories, but because you respect what it does for you and want to take the best care of it
- Resting when needed, and honouring your body’s natural rhythms and cycles
- Giving yourself a loving push when you’re coasting or avoiding discomfort, especially when you know you’re capable of more
- Enjoying treats guilt-free because they were intentional, not impulsive
- Speaking to yourself kindly—even when things don’t go as planned
- Choosing what you want most (your long-term goals) over what feels most comfortable in the moment
Why This Shift Works
Because it’s not just about changing your habits—
It’s about changing how you relate to yourself while changing your habits.
When your actions come from a place of self-respect and long-term care, you don’t need to rely on willpower to stay consistent.
You’re not swinging between extremes.
You’re not at war with yourself.
You’re just… living in integrity.
Something to Reflect On
Where do your weight and health naturally fall when you’re consistently focused on taking the best care of yourself?
What would shift if more of your energy went there?
You might be surprised by how much changes, without needing to force or control it.
