The only problem food can solve is physical hunger.
Yet we often try to fix boredom, restlessness, overwhelm, or anxiety with cookies, crackers, chips—or whatever your go-to comfort food is.
We eat and eat, but the problem is still there after the last bite.
Often, we inherit new problems, too:
- We feel bloated and uncomfortable.
- Our digestion takes a hit.
- We feel tired, foggy, and low on energy.
- Our clothes start to feel too tight.
- We’re left with guilt, shame, and frustration at our lack of control.
Food didn’t solve anything—it just postponed it. And now we have double the discomfort.
What to Do Instead
Next time you notice an urge to eat in response to a feeling—not actual hunger—try this simple practice.
- Set a timer on your phone for 1 minute.
- Get out of your head and into your body.
- Breathe deeply and slowly—in through your nose, out through your mouth.
- Witness the urge. Notice the thoughts that come with it:
- “I deserve a treat.”
- “I’ve had a hard day.”
- “A few bites won’t hurt.”
- “This will make me feel better.”
- Stay with the feeling—breathe, relax your muscles, and simply observe until the timer goes off.
Next time, try 2 minutes. Then 5. Then 10.
The Goal Isn’t Resistance—It’s Resilience
You’re not trying to white-knuckle your way through the urge. You’re building emotional endurance—the ability to feel and allow discomfort without having to escape, numb, or fix it with food.
And here’s the magic:
The more often you pause, breathe, and sit with it…
The more you break the automatic link between “feel something” and “eat something.”
The more confidence and self-trust you build.
You’ll prove to yourself:
There’s no emotion you can’t handle.
Final Thought
So what do you say?
Let’s fire food from the job of solving our problems.
(With the exception of actual physical hunger, of course.)
