Keeping Healthy Through the Holidays (No Weight Gain Required)

December is here—and with it, the holiday season.

While this time of year may look slightly (or a lot) different for each of us, one thing is constant: it’s easy to fall out of our regular healthy routines if we’re not intentional.

The holidays, however, don’t have to be synonymous with “putting on pounds” or “getting off track.”

Below are a few simple strategies to help you feel your best this season, while still enjoying the celebrations.

1. Avoid the “Holiday Pass”

The “Holiday Pass” is that mindset where you permit yourself to throw your habits out the window, telling yourself you’ll “start fresh” in January.

It’s similar to what I call the “Weekend Pass,” where you eat well during the week, but by the weekend, it’s game over. You promise to begin again Monday… and the cycle continues.

The problem? These “passes” often cancel out the progress made during the week.

Here’s the truth: you can enjoy the holidays and stay on track.

You can enjoy holiday treats while still eating well. You can rest and continue to move your body. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

2. Be Selective

You don’t need to deprive yourself, but it helps to be intentional.

Think quality over quantity.

There are special treats that only come around once a year, and then there are those that have festive packaging but are available year-round.

Ask yourself: Is this something I really enjoy and look forward to? Or am I just eating it because it’s there?

If you do want it, decide ahead of time how much feels like “enough.” For example, you might enjoy 2 chocolate truffles instead of mindlessly finishing the whole box.

And if you’re heading into a party or dinner where you’re worried about going overboard, go in with a plan. Decide ahead of time what you’ll indulge in—and how much—so you can enjoy it without guilt or regret.

3. Stick with Your Routine

Even if you’re indulging a bit more, that doesn’t mean everything else has to go off the rails.

Structure is your friend, especially during the holidays.

Keep showing up for your healthy habits:

  • Drink plenty of water
  • Stick to your regular workouts (even shorter versions count)
  • Eat balanced meals
  • Avoid grazing and mindless snacking
  • Get to bed at a consistent time

The more you stay anchored in your routine, the easier it is to feel energized and in control, and less likely to spiral into “Holiday Pass” mode.

You can finish the year strong, enjoy the holidays, and feel great doing it.
